Lightning Protection Design
Protecting people, structures and critical infrastructure from the destructive power of lightning strikes — designed to Australian and international standards.
Lightning Protection Design & Testing
GridServe delivers fully compliant lightning protection systems across Australia, engineered for your site’s specific risks, environmental conditions, and regulatory requirements. Every system is designed, installed, and tested to AS/NZS 1768:2021.
Standards-based design
All systems comply with AS/NZS 1768:2021, satisfying insurer, council, and statutory regulatory requirements from day one.
3D Modelling & Analysis

Built for Australia
Cyclone-rated, bushfire-compliant, and low-resistance earthing solutions for remote, arid, coastal, and high-risk environments.
GridServe supplies experienced and qualified professionals across standards-based lightning protection design, hazard assessment, and on-site testing. Our engineers are deployed on a contract, secondment, or managed services basis — integrating directly with your team to accelerate delivery, fill capability gaps, and ensure your projects are completed to the highest technical and governance standards.
Service Streams
Standards-based design — AS/NZS 1768:2021
Every GridServe lightning protection system is engineered and commissioned in full compliance with AS/NZS 1768:2021, covering risk assessment, component specification, installation protocols, and surge coordination. Compliance satisfies the requirements of insurers, councils, and statutory regulators.
- Site-specific lightning risk assessments
- Component and materials specification to standard requirements
- Installation workmanship and commissioning testing
- Surge protection coordination and equipotential bonding strategies
Rolling Sphere Method & 3D Modelling
GridServe applies the Rolling Sphere Method to identify strike risk zones across any structure. A sphere of defined radius — representing a descending lightning leader — is modelled rolling over and around the asset. Surfaces that contact the sphere are at direct strike risk. Air terminals, masts, and conductor systems are placed to intercept the sphere, creating fully protected zones. All modelling is validated in three dimensions using CDEGS SESShield-3D.
- Four protection levels per AS/NZS 1768:2021, each with a defined sphere radius
- Rolling Sphere and Volume Collection design methods applied
- 3D layout planning to eliminate unprotected areas
- Optimal air terminal and down conductor placement confirmed by model
System Components & Surge Protection
A GridServe LPS is designed as an integrated system — each component specified to perform a defined function and coordinate with the others. Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are selected to protect sensitive electronics including solar inverters, control panels, communications infrastructure, and telemetry systems.
- Air terminals — positioned at exposed high points to intercept strikes
- Down conductors — rated to carry lightning current safely to ground
- Earth termination systems — designed for Australian soil conditions including arid and rocky ground
- Equipotential bonding — eliminates dangerous potential differences across metallic structures
- Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) — specified for solar, BESS, communications, and control systems
