Project Overview
GridServe performed a detailed review of steady-state network studies for a utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The primary objective was to validate that the plant’s connection remains fully compliant with AusNet Services technical requirements under various seasonal and forecasted load conditions.
Key Project Scope & Deliverables
- Grid Compliance Modelling: Integrated BESS steady-state models into AusNet SINCAL feeder models, utilizing converted PSSE data for specialized BESS inverters to simulate real-world operation.
- Voltage Stability Analysis: Evaluated voltage variations across full export and full import cycles and verified the voltage profile against mandated thresholds.
- Thermal Loading & Power Flow: Assessed modelled currents against conductor ratings to prevent equipment stress and analysed power flow at the feeder head and Point of Connection (PoC).
- Reactive Capability & Power Factor: Validated the BESS’s power factor and reactive power capability at the PoC to support network stability.
- Fault Level & Sensitivity Studies: Analysed fault level impacts at the PoC and nearby zone substations, using both current and long-term forecasts to ensure ongoing reliability.
- Contingency & Trip Analysis: Evaluated voltage variation during a generator trip to confirm it remained within required limits.
Key Challenges
- Forecasted Scenario Analysis: Performing sensitivity studies against future load growth forecasts to ensure the BESS remains compliant as the network evolves.
- Model Integration: Successfully merging complex inverter models into utility-provided feeder architectures for high-fidelity steady-state results.
- Network Constraint Management: Navigating specific transfer conditions while maintaining strict voltage regulation across the local distribution network.
