Service Streams
HV Grid Connection Studies
Data centres typically connect to the grid at 11kV, 22kV, or 33kV — with some hyperscale facilities requiring 66kV or 132kV connections. Gridserve performs all power system studies required to support a successful network connection application with the relevant Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP) or Transmission Network Service Provider (TNSP), including study documentation in the format required by the network operator.
- Load flow and voltage analysis under normal and contingency network conditions
- Fault level and short circuit assessment — equipment ratings and network impact
- Protection coordination and relay settings for the connection point and internal distribution
- Harmonic assessment and power quality compliance against AS/NZS 61000 series limits
- Connection impact assessment reports for DNSP/TNSP submission
- Demand management and load profile modelling for connection capacity planning
Internal HV/LV Distribution System Design
The internal electrical distribution architecture of a data centre is as critical as its grid connection. Gridserve designs and analyses HV and LV switchgear arrangements, transformer configurations, busbar systems, and cable networks — applying rigorous load flow and fault analysis at every voltage level to confirm that all equipment is correctly rated, thermally compliant, and capable of carrying fault current without hazard to personnel or plant.
- HV switchgear and transformer sizing for primary, secondary, and tertiary distribution
- LV main switchboard and sub-distribution board fault rating verification
- Cable sizing and thermal rating to AS/NZS 3008 for all distribution feeders
- Busbar fault withstand assessment and short-circuit rating confirmation
- Internal protection philosophy development and relay coordination
- Arc flash hazard analysis and PPE category classification to IEEE 1584
Critical Power Resilience — UPS, Generators & ATS
Uninterrupted power is non-negotiable for data centre operations. Gridserve provides detailed engineering analysis of the critical power chain — from utility supply through UPS, static transfer switching, generator paralleling, and battery backup systems — to confirm that the facility can sustain operations through any credible supply disruption and that all redundancy claims are technically substantiated.
- N, N+1, and 2N redundancy architecture analysis for Tier II, III, and IV classifications
- UPS sizing, battery autonomy calculation, and inverter fault level contribution
- Diesel generator set sizing, paralleling configuration, and load acceptance verification
- Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and static bypass transfer time analysis
- Generator harmonic performance and impact on sensitive IT loads
- Critical load shedding scheme design for generator capacity constraints
- Commissioning test planning and results verification for critical power systems
Power Quality & Harmonic Analysis
Data centre loads are dominated by switched-mode power supplies, variable speed drives, UPS systems, and power distribution units — all of which are significant sources of harmonic distortion. Gridserve conducts detailed harmonic load flow studies to assess the distortion levels injected into both the internal distribution system and the supply network, and designs passive or active mitigation solutions where limits are exceeded.
- Harmonic current injection modelling for UPS, PDU, and VSD loads
- Harmonic load flow and impedance scan across internal distribution network
- THD compliance assessment against network operator limits and AS/NZS 61000-3-6
- Voltage unbalance and neutral current assessment for three-phase IT loads
- Passive harmonic filter and active power factor correction sizing
- Power quality monitoring strategy and post-connection measurement program
Earthing System Design & Testing
A correctly designed earthing system is fundamental to personnel safety and equipment protection in a data centre environment. Gridserve designs earthing systems that manage earth potential rise under fault conditions, provide a low-impedance reference for sensitive IT equipment, and comply with AS/NZS 3000 and the requirements of the network connection authority. All designs are modelled using CDEGS and validated through on-site testing.
- Site earthing system design to AS/NZS 3000 and relevant network operator requirements
- Earth potential rise (EPR) assessment under HV fault conditions
- Electrochemical bonding and equipotential bonding network design
- Soil resistivity surveying and CDEGS earth grid modelling
- Raised floor and IT equipment grounding strategy and design
- On-site earthing system testing — fall-of-potential, CIT, and continuity testing
Lightning Protection & Surge Coordination
Data centre facilities — with their rooftop mechanical plant, cooling towers, comms masts, and highly sensitive electronic infrastructure — present a demanding lightning protection design challenge. Gridserve applies the Rolling Sphere Method using CDEGS SESShield-3D to confirm complete structural protection, and designs a coordinated Surge Protection Device (SPD) scheme that limits transient overvoltages entering the facility through power and data cabling.
- Lightning protection system (LPS) design to AS/NZS 1768:2021
- 3D rolling sphere analysis using CDEGS SESShield-3D for complete structural coverage
- Air terminal, down conductor, and earth termination layout and specification
- SPD specification and coordination for HV/LV supply entry, data communications, and CCTV
- Equipment zone protection and equipotential bonding to IEC 62305 principles
- Lightning protection system testing and annual inspection program
